Kahala beach is an absolutely stunning beach that tends to have a lot less passer bys on weekdays.  Due to the stunning nature of the scenery, this beach is often used as a back drop by photographers and people getting married.  Kahala is a great alternative if you head over to Waikiki and it is too busy as it is a mere five minute car ride away.

Ala Moana Beach Park
If you want to mix a little shopping into your beach vacation, think about visiting Ala Moana Beach Park.  Ala Moana Beach park is located conveniently across the street from Ala Moana Shopping Center.  Perfect for those who want to hit the mall before they get their tan on.  Much like Kahala beach, this beach tends to have a lot of weddings, so get there early to get a good parking spot before the brides do.

Kailua Beach
If you want a nice quiet experience away from the hustle and bustle of the tourists, check out Kailua Beach.  Relax in front of beautiful blue water on the pearly white sand away from the grind and forget that Waikiki was ever even an option.  Once you experience this tropical beach, you are probably never going to consider heading back to the oh so hectic beach of Waikiki.

It’s safe to say that Hawaii is not only one of the most beautiful states in America – it’s one of the most beautiful places in the world. Remebering Fondly My Time in Nice, France

I spent some time in France last year and it was definitely one of my most favorite travel experiences. No matter how much I loved Paris, it was really the south of France and the Cote D’Azur that really got me. It was the most romantic and beatiful place I think I have ever been. Walking around Paris I got a feeling that everything had been manufactured for tourism. The lack of sidewalks and grass and the presence of only loose gravel in their place I felt really took away from the beauty that the city had to offer.

Walking around Nice, though, gave me a feeling unlike any other city. The Promenade des Anglais is an incredible walk from one end of the city to the other along one of the world’s most famous coast lines. Sunsets along the beach there always seemed to cast perfect light upon the city from any view point you could find. Meeting people was particularly easy as I found that most of the French people in this region were incredibly friendly and would always try to make new friends. I met some of my best friends in Nice and shared some incredibly romantic walks through vieux Nice to watch the sun set over the city and the Mediterranean.

Anyways, while I was there I managed to take more than just a few pictures but I didn’t have a video camera. I found this video on Vimeo and it brought back some incredibly romantic nostalgic feelings. There’s nothing quite like dating in the South of France. I’m honestly considering buying another plane ticket so I can get over there and visit some old friends. Mon Dieu, Nice est belle.

5 Major Ways We Are Hurting the Environment And How To Reduce Our Impact

Knowledge is power. That is why I have created this list of ways that we as individuals are ruining the environment and what we can do to reduce our impact.

1. We use too much energy

All homes run on energy. We need energy for our fridges, our TV’s, our heat and AC and our water heaters. Our homes consume more energy then we might think they do. All of this energy consumption, whether it is actively being used or not, hurts the environment and it hurts our wallets. Luckily, there are lots of things that can be done to reduce our energy consumption and therefore our impact on saving the environment.

• Clean & replace air filters in your air conditioning unit on a regular basis.
• Lower the thermostat on your water heater.
• Turn off or shut off your water heater when you go away for vacations or extended trips.
• Turn off lights in rooms that are not being used to save money, energy, the environment and increase the lifespan of your bulb.
• Do not constantly open the oven/fridge door or leave them open as this can reduce/increase the temperature by up to 25 degrees each time.
• Unplug seldom used appliances.
• Wash clothes in cold water versus hot water to reduce energy usage required to heat up the water.
• Use compact fluorescent light bulbs.
• Ensure your home is well insulated and sealed.
• Use cold water vs. hot or warm water whenever possible.
• Connect outdoor lights, pumps, etc on a timer.
• Install solar panels on your home to heat your pool or house for a fraction of the cost.

2. Our homes are full of toxins

Most individuals are painfully unaware of the number of toxins that are in our homes. These toxins are emitted from appliances, cleaning products and older paints. We can reduce the level of toxins in our homes through a few simple steps and this will not only help the environment but also our health.

• Purchase items without mercury whenever possible.
• Dispose of items with mercury at appropriate facilities.
• Increase your knowledge of alternative cleaning products that do not contain harsh chemicals.
• Become familiar with labeling practices of household cleaners and always review before use or purchase.
• Test your paint for lead if you live in an older home.
• Use the least amount of toxic products if you cannot find an alternative.

3. We throw out too much garbage

Without evening realizing it, most households fill up 2+ cans of trash that goes straight to landfills. This is increasingly effective the environment in negative factors due to the need for more landfills and the non-degradability of many products that consumers purchase. You can however reduce your trash by paying attention to what you buy and what you throw out.

• Donate instead of garbage products whenever possible.
• Buy items in bulk from loose bins vs. individual packages.
• 33% of what we throw away is packaging so be consumer-savvy and try to buy products with less packaging or recyclable packaging.
• Ensure that the proper items are being recycled instead of thrown away.
• Buy re-usable products.
• Keep your products in good condition to avoid having to buy replacement products.
• Use cloth bags and napkins instead of plastic or paper
• Buy rechargeable batteries.
• Set up your own compost for vegetable and food products.
• Buy used products whenever possible.

4. We use too much paper at work

Not only do we harm the environment at home, but we also harm the environment through our offices and work locations. Luckily for us, there are lots of ways we can reduce our carbon footprint through our work.

• Start an inner-office recycling program.
• Print on both sides of paper.
• Use email and phone versus mail and printed documents whenever possible.
• Reuse folders, envelopes and other office supplies wherever possible.
• Use recycled paper.
• Use scrap paper and the backs of paper for notes and reminders.
• Use a re-usable or ceramic coffee cup.

5. We don’t watch our water usage

This is one of the most major environmental concerns faced by individuals, countries and the global community. Our water usage is over-whelming compared to what a household actually requires on a daily basis. There are however many ways we can reduce our water usage and the electric requirements in our every day life.

• Fix water leaks in a timely manner.
• Install economic and efficient devices on showers, toilets and faucets.
• Do not leave the water running when you wash dishes or brush your teeth.
• Install low-flow shower heads.
• Only use your laundry machine and dishwasher when you have a full-load.
• Take short showers and always take a shower vs. a bath.

Rudolph Goes To Hell

For those of us over the age of seven, I’m sure we are all familiar with the world famous 1964 movie Rudolph The Red Nosed Reigndeer.

Like clockwork, every year around Christmas you will find this movie playing at least once a week on one of the major network channels.  I loved the movie when I was a kid, and now at nearly 30, I can still sit down and watch this movie all the way through without looking at my watch.  Since the movie is over 40 years old, there are lots of things that probably would no longer be considered politically correct.  As a result, dozens of ‘edits’ have been made around the world providing us some hilarious mash up video content mocking the world famous movie.

The Hawaii Overprint Note

I Thought this was a pretty neat little note about America during the Second World War. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the Government had legitimate concern that the tiny islands in the south pacific would fall to the Japanese.  All of the Hawaiian currency was stamped “Hawaii” so that if the state was taken, the currency that may have been stolen by the Japanese wouldn’t have any value. If you are lucky enough to get one of these notes, you will have what is known as a “Hawaii overprint note“.

In early January, 1942, Military Governor Delos Carleton Emmons issued a recall of all American cash to be exchanged for the new, stamped bills. Individuals could change only $200 in cash but if you were a business owner, you were allowed anywhere up to $500.

At the end of the whole experiment, the military was in possession of $200,000,000 US dollars that nobody could spend in Hawaii. Rather than shipping it back to the mainland, the money was burned, most of it, anyway. To make sure that none of it flew out the top of the smoke stack as it burned, there was a thin piece of mesh installed making sure nobody got any half burnt bills.

Halloween Costume Ideas For Kids

Children love Halloween and any other costume party they get to go to, especially  little girls who always prefer to wear glamorous costumes like the princess costume. Whether it is the classic Cinderella costume or the Star Wars series costumes, they have always been the favorites. Costumes for kids should be worthy, but they must also be attractive and of course comfortable.

There are many kids costumes available commercially but some of the best and most memorable ones are those made at home by very creative people. My kids love to dress up, and I’m sure your children love to play make believe. Since you were once a child, you know just how much fun dressing up can be. Spacemen, ballerinas, lumberjacks, and pirates all can be real and they all can rub off on every adult. The world would be a much better place if, for a moment, everyone got the opportunity to experience being a child for just one moment.
