4 Alternative Beaches to Waikiki

Waikiki can be a busy beach and if you aren’t really a big fan of snuggling up to a random stranger, it might not be the best beach for you in Honolulu.  Luckily, Honolulu is packed full of beautiful beaches, some of which are much more spacious and without tons of people.

Diamond Head Beach
If you are interested in windsurfing, regular surfing or just some good ol fashion sun tanning, Diamond Head beach is a great place to check out.  Getting down to the beach is kind of difficult because of all the monster homes that line the beach have kind of blocked out parking.  If you are willing to to park at the Diamond head lookout and climb down the rocks you will be treated to an awesome beach with lots of secluded areas where you can spend your day in peace.

Kahala Beach
Kahala beach is an absolutely stunning beach that tends to have a lot less passer bys on weekdays.  Due to the stunning nature of the scenery, this beach is often used as a back drop by photographers and people getting married.  Kahala is a great alternative if you head over to Waikiki and it is too busy as it is a mere five minute car ride away.

Ala Moana Beach Park
If you want to mix a little shopping into your beach vacation, think about visiting Ala Moana Beach Park.  Ala Moana Beach park is located conveniently across the street from Ala Moana Shopping Center.  Perfect for those who want to hit the mall before they get their tan on.  Much like Kahala beach, this beach tends to have a lot of weddings, so get there early to get a good parking spot before the brides do.

Kailua Beach
If you want a nice quiet experience away from the hustle and bustle of the tourists, check out Kailua Beach.  Relax in front of beautiful blue water on the pearly white sand away from the grind and forget that Waikiki was ever even an option.  Once you experience this tropical beach, you are probably never going to consider heading back to the oh so hectic beach of Waikiki.

The Hawaii Overprint Note

I Thought this was a pretty neat little note about America during the Second World War. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the Government had legitimate concern that the tiny islands in the south pacific would fall to the Japanese.  All of the Hawaiian currency was stamped “Hawaii” so that if the state was taken, the currency that may have been stolen by the Japanese wouldn’t have any value. If you are lucky enough to get one of these notes, you will have what is known as a “Hawaii overprint note“.

In early January, 1942, Military Governor Delos Carleton Emmons issued a recall of all American cash to be exchanged for the new, stamped bills. Individuals could change only $200 in cash but if you were a business owner, you were allowed anywhere up to $500.

At the end of the whole experiment, the military was in possession of $200,000,000 US dollars that nobody could spend in Hawaii. Rather than shipping it back to the mainland, the money was burned, most of it, anyway. To make sure that none of it flew out the top of the smoke stack as it burned, there was a thin piece of mesh installed making sure nobody got any half burnt bills.

Hard Ticket to Hawaii Death Scene

In what is to be probably the worst death scene in all action film history, a pair of mean end up killing a skateboarder and his blowup doll as they fly through the air by launching a couple rockets at them. I really couldn’t stop laughing after i saw this ridiculous piece of cinema, if it can be called that.

Needing to know more, I dug into this movie called “Hard Ticket to Hawaii” written and directed by Andy Sidaris. It is widely considered to be one of the worst movies of all time and it has the production quailty of pornography of the same era. It seems that Andy Sidaris kind of had a knack for creating the God awful masterpieces and he made a living out of it and even has a steady cult following. This garbage has a 2.9 on IMDB and people either seem to love it or hate it. I think that the best part of the movie is right here and there’s no reason to waste a couple hours of your life on this.

The Hawaii Chair

I really think it’s a shame that a product this ridiculous is named after my gorgeous state. Unfortunately, there is no copyrighting names of places and the Hawaii Chair was born. Essentially, the chair has a seat that rotates in a way that, if you happened to be sitting on it, your hips move in a circular motion similar to the hula dance, or hoop if that helps you out more.

I can’t imagine having to deal with a coworker riding one of these things every day. It would just get on my nerves. Not just actually watching them go around in circles looking ridiculous but because they would be pretending there wasn’t anything weird going on. I would go crazy.
